This São Paulo firm was launched in 2019 as Macedo Garcia Advogados. Founder Paulo Macedo Garcia Neto had been a partner at L O Baptista Advogados during its heyday as one of Brazil’s leading arbitration firms. He was joined soon after by a second partner, former Levy & Salomão lawyer Mariana Capela Lombardi Moreto.

In 2021, L O Baptista’s entire arbitration practice – including partners Fernando Marcondes, Silvia Julio Bueno de Miranda, Rafael Francisco Alves and Alberto Sanz Sogayar – left to join Garcia’s firm, which then rebranded as MAMG Advogados.

Three former senior associates at L O Baptista – Mariana Cattel Alves, Lígia Espolaor Veronese and Bruno Panarella – also joined the partnership at MAMG, bringing the total number of partners to nine.

Marcondes is particularly well known in the construction and infrastructure space and is the Brazilian representative at the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation.

Who uses it?

Clients are mostly Brazilian, including sewage utilities company Sagua, construction company Jurema and highway concessionaire VIABAHIA.

Track record

While at L O Baptista, Bueno de Miranda and others helped Brazil’s national development bank BNDES defeat a US$250 million claim brought by Ecuador’s state power utility Hidropastaza, which concerned a loan for a hydropower plant.

MAMG is representing Sagua in an arbitration against the city of Guarulhos in São Paulo over alleged breaches of concession agreement for the sewage system of the city, which the city authorities purportedly terminated. The firm secured a positive partial award in 2021, which found that the city wrongfully terminated the contract.

Recent events

Much of the firm’s work is confidential, but it is representing VIABAHIA in a Brasilia-seated CAM-CCBC arbitration with Brazil’s National Land Transport Agency over a concession contract that the firm’s client is seeking to renegotiate. The contract is worth more than US$500 million.

It is acting for Jurema in an ICC arbitration with the state of Bahia over a World Bank-financed project to restore and maintain highways. MAMG is also acting on related litigation before the Brazilian courts.
